They get critiqued by the bosses wife, friends, clients, sales people. Everything they do is under a microscope. It affects them. It would hurt anybody, and these are highly sensitive individuals! Imagine what that must be like. What if every meeting you conduct, every memo you write is under the same examination? Write that note with the wrong tone and you get criticized. Send the "wrong message" and therell be a special interest group gathering in the lobby in protest, campaigning to have you fired. Thats what its like to be on the air, to lay your heart out every day.

One day they have their listeners laughing hysterically with their one-liners and lightning wit. The next, they have them pulled off at the side of the road re-applying make up because the show has made them cry on the way to work. Any show that creates a bond with listeners that sparks emotional responses will win the ratings war. Stir up feelings of anger, compassion, patriotism, lust, greed, fear, or any number of other possibilities. Identify an emotion, then create emotional moments on the radio and listeners cant turn off their radio because theyre afraid of what theyll miss.
